Parents, please read the short essay below. It explains to you my passions as to why I not only want to be a teacher but as to why I cannot wait to teach and mold your children.

An ambition of mine is to have a working knowledge and appreciation of the diversity among learners. This moral virtue is important because a teacher needs to be sensitive to an array of diverse students. I plan on working on this in many ways such as putting many observation hours into diverse locations. Having more experience working with children from diverse backgrounds will give me an appreciation for them since I can see the hardships they overcome. As well as hardships, diverse learners can face challenges such as not having the ability to speak English well. Therefore by having experiences observing or having hands on work tutoring or mentoring an English as a Second Language student, I will have knowledge on how to work with those students as well as an understanding from where they are coming from and how I can best help them.

Another virtue I need to develop is having a wide general and deep knowledge of my selected content area. Being an English major, there is always learning to do. Since I am a sophomore, I plan on continuing my education for at least another two years. I have previously taken summer classes at a local community college, and am prepared to take even more this summer and possibly the following. Consequently, with all the additional knowledge I will gain from taking extra classes, I will be better educated and have greater content to teach my students. Also, I am just starting to take classes that will count towards my major. This means that I have just started learning the general and deep content that I need to be a successful teacher.

The last virtue that I feel I should improve upon is having an understanding of what affects learning and appropriate teaching strategies. I feel that since I have just started taking my first Curriculum and Instruction class, that most information that will be of help to me will come from these classes. I need to attend class regularly and apply the information and techniques learned in class to practice and put into good use. I can practice the appropriate teaching strategies when I do my observations or student teaching hours, as well as during my volunteer tutoring. Only practice makes perfect, thus once I learn the proper methods, only putting them to use can help me perfect this virtue.

All in all, as a student only beginning her major, now is the opportune time for me to begin looking towards the future and what I need to work on. Now is the time when I should be setting goals for myself and scrutinizing what parts of myself I need to improve on to be a successful professional educator. Only hard work and dedication now will prepare me to educate my future students in a way that is thorough, brilliant and enjoyable for all.
